This piece is for four Open Score parts and two percussion parts. The percussion parts can be played either with conventional percussion instruments or “homemade” percussion such as pots, pans, boxes, or glasses of water. The first percussion part needs three distinct pitches and the second only requires one instrument or sound.
Leif Haley on Voice of the Desert:
“I wrote the original “Voice of the Desert” back in 2017, not long after I had begun composing, and it’s a piece I’ve always liked. I was intrigued by the possibilities of writing an open score for mixed ensemble, and a reworking of this piece seemed like a great chance both to explore something new and to revisit something old. A lot had to be changed, but I think the character of the piece is immutable: the voice of such a terrible and beautiful landscape is steadfast regardless of reworkings, replayings, or orchestrations.”
